Instructions: How to get a topic for your SPBA, P1, or P2 Project
The Topic Assignment Procedure
In our research groups, topics are assigned to students based on an internal procedure. You can learn about the current status of that procedure on our Open Topics page.
Register via u:space
Whether you are looking for a topic for your Bachelor's thesis, P1 project, or P2 project, please first ensure that you register for the correct group via u:space before the deadline, and that you fulfill all the necessary requirements as per your curriculum - otherwise, we will most likely be unable to offer you supervision.
Furthermore, please ensure that you attend the mandatory kick-off meeting and register your presence there. The date, time, and location of the kick-off meeting are published in due time on the u:find page of the respective course.
Choose your Topics
The topics we offer for SPBA, P1, and P2 projects are listed in Section A of our Open Topics page. Unless a topic's description states otherwise, it is available for all our practical courses (SPBA, P1, and P2). However, please note that the topic may be adapted in terms of scope and scientific claims to meet the requirements of a Bachelor's thesis (12 ECTS), P1 project (6 ECTS), or P2 project (12 ECTS), respectively.
We advise that you browse the list of topics and, based on your skills and interests, choose several topics that you are willing to work on. Ensure to self-enroll in our dedicated Moodle course (called “Organisation of SPBA/P1/P2 Practical Courses offered by the Research Group MIS”) and…
- let us know which course you are pursuing (SPBA, P1, or P2), and
- submit your choice of up to 3 topics (ranked by priority) in the form on Moodle.
After the deadline for submitting your topic choices (which will be announced during our mandatory kick-off meeting, on the Moodle page, and often also via E-Mail), we will then strive to fairly allocate the topics to all interested students based on your ranking and our (often limited) supervision capacities. You will then be informed of your initial allocation before the de-registration deadline.
When choosing your preferences, we strongly recommend selecting topics offered by different (or multiple) supervisors. This way, we can more easily balance the workload among our team members, thus increasing your chances of securing supervision with our research group.
Optionally, though highly recommended: To foster your interest in a topic or topics, you may tell us about any specific skills you may have for your chosen topics, and why you would like to pursue them. This way, we can get a clearer picture of your skills, which helps us assign you a topic that we believe matches your expertise and interests. We are also available in case you have questions about a specific topic, or want to propose a topic of your own that you believe fits one of the potential supervisor's research areas. To do so, please send an email (using your University email address) with the subject “[SPBA topic] …”, “[P1 topic] …”, or “[P2 topic] …” as soon as possible to the topic's advisor(s). You may find a list of possible supervisors and their contact information below.
